  • A zddp additive to synthetic oil gives your engine the extra lubrication it needs during the critical start-up period.     The zinc in zddp is actually an anti-wear additive called Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP). It works as a temporary lubricant when mating metals make contact. The temperature of the metallic surface rises during operation, causing a chemical reaction with the ZDDP additive. This chemistry creates a layer of lubrication between the surfaces, reinforcing the film produced by the existing motor oil.

    Synthetic motor oils have lower friction due to their chemical structure and can handle higher operating temperatures than mineral oils. But they don’t contain enough ZDDP to give an older car the protection it needs in those crucial first moments of start-up when a new engine’s pistons, camshafts and bearings are moving with extreme force and speed.

    Some companies claim you can solve the flat-tappet camshaft wear problem by pouring in a can of ZDDP additive to your oil. However, a tribologist at Driven Racing Oil warns that mixing an acidic additive like ZDDP into high-detergent oil can cause a chemical reaction and clog the lubrication-carrying crevices in cylinder walls.

  • FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) is a melt-processable resin invented by DuPont in 1956 and sold under the trademark Teflon®. It is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. This resin can be used in conventional injection molding and screw extrusion techniques.

    It has similar chemical resistance to PTFE, but performs better over a wider temperature range. It is translucent, lubricious to the touch and feels heavy due to its high molecular weight. Its chemically inert and has very low binding with a very low extractables content and is not reactive to most chemicals, except molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine precursors at elevated temperatures.

    Like many superheroes, this material does have a weakness. It does not sterilize well at elevated temperatures (over 400°F). Additionally, it can be easily scratched by abrasive materials and may deform under mechanical loads.

    In injection molding, ptfe fep is very easy to work with and requires no additives or lubricants. It is very good at forming complex geometries and can be formed with an excellent surface finish. It is a poor heat conductor, however, and does not transmit thermal energy efficiently. This is why it is best to use a hot plate or avoid using a glass lid with your FEP-based laboratory vessels.

  • For years ZDDP, also known as zinc dialkyldithiophosphate and often abbreviated to ZDTP, was a mainstay of many engine oil formulations. It is a sacrificial anti-wear additive that is particularly effective in flat tappet camshafts and valve train components. The big drawback was that the USA Clean Air Act pushed for a 75% decrease in emissions and forced manufacturers to reduce ZDDP levels. It is now very difficult to find an oil with a high level of Zinc.

    This was a sobering blow to the lubricant industry, but new chemistries were quickly developed. The challenge was that such a significant change required costly testing to prove compliance with product specifications.

    In addition to their sacrificial anti-wear properties, ZDDPs are effective in creating thicker lubricant films by chemically bonding with the surfaces they coat, forming tribofilms that protect metal-to-metal contact. They can also function as effective antioxidants, decomposing the hydroperoxides formed when base oils oxidize in the presence of heat and pressure.

    Adding a zddp additive to synthetic oil is not an easy task, and the first thing that any petroleum engineer will tell you is that pouring in foreign chemistry is never a good idea. ZDDP is acidic and mixes poorly with detergents and other additives in the oil. This causes chemical reactions that can actually reduce the effectiveness of the sacrificial anti-wear protection. A better solution is to use a premium oil that already contains the proper dosage of ZDDP and phosphorus.

  • Most of us who are into cars love old cars, from the way they feel when we get behind the wheel to the way they look parked in our driveways. Many of these vehicles need a special type of motor oil with zinc in it to keep them running right and looking great.

    Modern oils have very little Zinc (ZDDP) in them due to the fact that it can interfere with some engine sensors and also damage catalytic converters. But, oil testing done on older engines has shown that there is a short period of time during engine start up where a non-zinc oil won't provide sufficient metal-to-metal lubrication to avoid friction between flat tappet cams and their followers.

    So, the big question is how do we get the anti-wear protection back into our motor oils? Fortunately, there are several different additives on the market that when mixed into our favorite oil can provide the necessary levels of ZDDP. The most popular one is probably that STP oil treatment you see on AutoZone shelves, but there are also Lucas engine break in oil and Amsoil Z-Rod based oils available.

    Zinc (or more specifically, ZDDP) is an excellent sacrificial anti-wear additive that bonds with the surfaces of moving metal parts. The biggest need for it in a classic car or hot rod is in the camshaft, where its lobes push down on the valve stems to open the engine's valves. The parts that press against these lobes are called the followers and they roll or slide along the lobe's surface. When these two parts are squeezed together at high speeds, intense pressure is created that can wear out the lobes and followers and create the need for anti-wear protection.
